韓国の「おじさん」と「おばさん」
私たちが日常で「近所のおじさん、おばさん」というように、韓国でも日常的に
「おじさん、おばさん」という呼び方が使われます。
しかし、その「おじさん、おばさん」の使われ方は、日本と韓国では少し違います。
まず、見ず知らずの中年のことを話す時に「おじさん、おばさん」を使うのは
日本も韓国も同じです。
しかし、身内の話になると違ってきます。
日本では、父親と母親の兄弟姉妹も「おじさん、おばさん」と呼びます。
勿論、漢字で書くと「叔父・伯父」という違いはありますが、同じように
発音するので、何となく漢字で書いても同じだと思えてきます。
韓国では、叔父や叔母には別の呼称があり、「大きいお父さん」が父親のお兄さん、
「小さいお父さん」が父親の弟という意味になります。
母親の兄弟姉妹に関しても、同じように、独自の呼称が使われます。
あと、日本でも韓国でも、30代に入ると、途端に自分たちがおじさん、おばさんに
なった気分になり、決してプラスのイメージはないのですが、韓国は完全な年功序列
社会、年上の人は年下より偉く、教養もあるということで、「お兄さん」と呼ばれる
より、むしろ「おじさん」と呼んでほしい人もいるのです。
おじさんのほうが、何となく偉い気がするからです。
ものは捉えようで、おじさんやおばさんという言葉が、とても良い響きに聞こえる
ことがあるというのは、文化の違いの面白いところだと思います。

An older man and an older woman in South Korea
Like we usually say an older man or an older woman in a neighborhood in our everyday lives in Japan, people do in South Korea.
However, the usage of these terms in Japan is slightly different from that in South Korea.
First of all, when you talk about the middle aged strangers, you say an older man or an older woman both in Japan and South Korea.
However, when it comes to the relatives, the situation is different.
In Japan, brothers and sisters of parents are called an uncle or an aunt.
Of course, there is difference between an older man and an uncle when these terms are written in Chinese characters, but these pronunciations are the same, so they seem similar.
In South Korea, there are another names for uncles and aunts.
The elder brother of father is referred to as a big father, and the younger brother of father is referred to as a small father.
Also in the same way, the unique names are used for a mother's brothers and sisters.
Furthermore, people tend to feel they are older men and older women themselves in their thirties both in South Korea in Japan, which is not positive image though. But, some Korean people hope to be called an older man rather than a younger man as the society in South Korea is seniority-based, so older people are regarded as being superior and more educated than younger people.
They feel that an old man is more superior.
It is an interesting point of cultural difference that terms, an older man and an older woman are regarded as good expressions.
